Gdańsk, Poland: The Baltic’s Amber Capital Still Runs on Kraków Prices, Minus the Crowds (2026 Guide)

We already made the case for Wrocław over Kraków. Gdańsk is Poland’s other counterargument: a Hanseatic port city on the Baltic coast, red-brick Gothic architecture down the Long Market, and eight centuries of amber trade history, still meaningfully cheaper than the well-trodden southern circuit.

What to See, Mostly for Free

The Long Market and Long Lane, Gdańsk’s Royal Route, cost nothing to walk and deliver the same red-brick, gabled-facade drama as Kraków’s main square with a fraction of the tour groups. Most of the city’s churches are free to enter, including St. Mary’s, one of the largest brick churches in the world. The waterfront along the Motława River, lined with the historic Crane and merchant houses, is free at any hour and best at golden hour.

Where to Eat

Bar Mleczny Neptun on the Long Market is the rare milk bar that survived directly on the city’s most touristed street, serving subsidized traditional Polish food at a fraction of what surrounding restaurants charge for the same dishes.

Local Tips Only Locals Know

Book accommodation early for summer, prices swing up to 30% higher in peak season and down 20% in winter for identical rooms. Skip the amber jewellery stalls directly on the Long Market, the same pieces sell for less two streets back, and genuine Baltic amber always feels warm rather than cold to the touch, a fast way to spot plastic imitations. Free attractions, church visits and old-town walks, cost nothing and should anchor most of your itinerary before paying museum entries.
