Košice, Slovakia: The Country’s Other Capital, at Half the Price (2026 Guide)

We already made the case for Bratislava over Vienna. Košice pushes the same logic further east: Slovakia’s second city, once the historic capital of Upper Hungary, built around the largest Gothic cathedral in the country, at prices that undercut even Bratislava.

Daily Budget Benchmarks for Košice in 2026

  • Accommodation: hostels are budget-friendly and community-oriented; private Airbnb rentals run under €60 a night.
  • Food: local pubs serving traditional meals keep daily food costs well below tourist-focused restaurants.
  • Activities: most museums and monuments charge €7 or less for entry.
  • Total daily budget: around €25 to €45 a day depending on season and lifestyle.

What to See, Mostly for Free

The historic centre, anchored by St. Elisabeth Cathedral, the largest church in Slovakia, is entirely walkable and costs nothing to explore on foot. The Singing Fountain in the main square puts on a free light-and-water show on summer evenings, genuinely worth timing a walk around. Hlavná ulica, the elongated main square itself, is lined with pastel townhouses free to admire at any hour.

Where to Eat

Local pubs away from Hlavná ulica serve hearty Slovak staples, halušky and goulash among them, at prices noticeably below the restaurants directly on the main square.

Local Tips Only Locals Know

The compact centre means almost everything is walkable, budget nothing for transport within the city itself. A basic prepaid SIM or eSIM data plan runs €5 to €10 and is worth arranging on arrival rather than relying on patchy café wifi. Košice sees a fraction of Bratislava’s tourist volume, which means better availability and lower accommodation prices even during what would be peak season further west.
