Maribor, Slovenia: Home to the World’s Oldest Living Grapevine (2026 Guide)
We covered the capital through Ljubljana. Maribor is Slovenia’s second city and its wine country in miniature: a Guinness World Record grapevine over 450 years old still producing fruit annually, hillside vineyards ringing the city, and prices that undercut the capital.

Daily Budget Benchmarks for Maribor in 2026
- Accommodation: hostel beds at Uni Hostel or Hostel Pekarna run from around €15 a night.
- Food: a local pizzeria meal averages €7 to €8, skip the main-square restaurants for the same savings.
- Wine: a restaurant glass runs €3 to €4; supermarket bottles €6 to €8.
- Total daily budget: around €40 to €55 a day for a comfortable trip.
What to See, Mostly for Free
Lent, the old town along the Drava River, is free to walk and home to the record-holding vine itself, viewable from outside at any hour. The riverside promenade and the surrounding hills, laced with vineyard paths, cost nothing to wander and deliver views most wine regions charge tour prices for.
Where to Eat and Drink
Local wine cellars, kleti, across the hills around Maribor offer walk-in tastings without the advance booking that comparable regions in France or Italy require, ask at any cellar door rather than pre-arranging online.
Local Tips Only Locals Know
Time a visit for late June if possible, when Festival Lent fills the old town with music and street performance and the city feels genuinely alive rather than sleepy. The Oldest Vine House ties a wine tasting and a short film together for a fair price and is worth the stop even for non-wine-drinkers, purely for the record-breaking novelty. Mariborsko Pohorje, the mountain immediately above the city, is reachable by cable car for hiking or skiing depending on season, at prices well under equivalent Alpine resorts.
Next in the Series: Košice
Maribor follows Rijeka in this run. Next: Košice, Slovakia, the country’s underrated eastern capital.
